US security strategy

The United States of America recently unveiled a new national as well as global security strategy to tackle the burgeoning terrorist threat and other security issues. The security strategy underlines US President George Bush’s principles and foreign policy approach relating to countering terrorist threat, maintain world peace and creating new world order.
Themes
The aim of the new security strategy is to make the world a safer and better place to live in. The Bush administration focuses two main themes in the security document that includes promoting human dignity through political and economic freedom; and providing security against terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
In its security strategy, the Bush administration says the United States will use this moment of opportunity to extend the benefits of freedom across the globe and we will actively work to bring the hope of democracy, development, free markets, and free trade to every corner of the world.
Historically, American foreign policy has always been guided by its national interest and the policy of internationalism—actively engaging US in attaining the goal of democracy, human rights, free society and free trade. At the present unipolar world, the United States has both intention and ability to attain these goals through its active engagement as well as mobilisation of allies in the international affairs.
As the peace and international security is the prime concern of the US strategy at a time when terrorism has posed a serious threat to world peace. Under this new vision, US diplomatic activities, economic aid and trade efforts are expected to be influenced and guided by the wish of promotion of open societies, universal principles of human rights and economic liberalisation.
The new security strategy, which the Bush Administration describes as the new millenium challenge account of aid, is to support only those countries that liberalise their political and economic systems. To receive US economic and other assistance, it requires countries to effectively fight corruption, respect basic human rights, ensure the rule of law, adequately invest in health care and education, adopt responsible economic policies and encourage and promote private sector.
Human dignity, limited power of the state, vibrant civil society and private sector, free speech, freedom of worship, equal justice, religious and ethnic tolerance and the respect for private property are other fundamental policies to guide US foreign and economic aid policies.
This speaks of the fact that the US governemnt is firm and committed to protect democracy, open society, rule of law and economic liberalisation and good and accountable governemnt around the world. In the present unipolar world, the United States has a unique and historic role to play for the security of the world and guiding the world towards a better future. The document, thus, clearly underlines US especial responsibility towards the world.
The United State is the only super power and the mightest nation in the world. Its decisions definitely have a great and far-reaching influence and impact in the decision making of the international community. The United States has adequate capabilities to carry out its security strategy unilaterally, it, however, wants to create an international alliance to accomplish its lofty goals of creating just and better societies around the world. It is so because it wants every nation to be responsible in the world affairs and equally reap benefits from the just world order.
For example, let us take the example of war against terrorism. Terrorism is the global problem and all civil socities and responsible nation need to fight against it. The world sided with the United States and actively engaged in this war. As a result, the success has been quicker.
The US –led war against terrorism is shifting from South Asia to other regions—Middle East and Africa. This war is targetted against those who have provided safe heaven to terrorists. There has been a coalition between tyrants and terrorists in some parts of the world especially in Middle East and Africa. These tyrants who have not only supported and given shelter to terrorists but also amassed weapons of mass destruction like nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Those who are not elected by the people are not responsible and accountable to the people. If such weapons remain in the possession and control of irresponsible and ruthless dictators, they might, one day, be used by terrorists against civilised nations and people.
It is, thus, necessary to disarm such nations and regimes that posses and develop weapons of mass destruction. At present, the United States wants every nation to abide by the rules and resolution of the United Nation and act accordingly. This alone makes the world a secured place.
However, some nations have continued to defy the UN decisions and resolutions and developed weapons of mass destruction. For instance, the present regime of Iraq, a member of the United Nations, has defied UN decisions and resolution, by refusing to allow the UN inspector to freely inspect its weapons.
This has been a major concern and worry of the international community including the United States. US now wants Iraq to disarm itself for the peace and security not only in the Middle East but also in the world. Every nation must respect UN decisions and implement it. It is the duty of the all members of the UN to be united against those who violate the decisions of the world body.
The US has clearly spoken against those who enjoy absolute power by suppressing people and denying their fundamental rights. It has made a clarian call to all people around the world to oust and disarm dictaros in favour of democracy, human rights and open society. This is based on the US commitment and policy of promoting democracy, freedom, human rights and liberal economy outlined in the new security strategy. This is the age of democracy. The wave of democracy has swept across the world. With the revolution in the field of science and technology, the world has become a narrow global village. No body can even imagine to keep people isolated from the world affairs. All people now need to enjoy the fruit of democracy, open society and development. For this, people across the world need to stand with united vioce and collective campaign.
